UNDERGLAZING TIPS

Underglazes are for use on all clays using a variety of techniques. Colors may be applied directly to greenware or bisqued ware, covered with a clear or semi-opaque glaze and fired to the maturing temperature of the glaze. We suggest using zinc-free glazes with all underglaze colors. When using a pink or purple underglaze which will be fired above Cone 4, a glaze containing 6-8% Calcium Oxide (12-15% Calcium Carbonate) is recommended.

We strongly recommend testing for all clays, glazes and colors using your own techniques and firing methods.

Mixing Instructions:

Underglazes are mixed in equal parts with Standard’s E-100 Painting Medium, for example, 1 tablespoon dry underglaze to 1 tablespoon E-100, or 4 oz. (by weight) of underglaze to 4 liquid ounces of E-100. Underglazes may be thinned with water.

Brush cleaning is best done while underglazes are still moist.
